It’s a little known fact that the first Ford Ranger was actually a sedan, the Edsel Ranger, back in 1958. While the Edsel Ranger may have missed the mark, since then the Ford Ranger has and continues, to hit the mid-size truck mark with pride and passion.

The new Ford Ranger is loaded with power, comfortable features, and the latest technology inside and out. A stylish exterior adds to the appeal of Ford’s smallest pickup truck that outperforms the competition at nearly every turn. Here’s a look at some of the best features on the 2020 Ford Ranger truck enthusiasts everywhere love.

Curb Appeal

While the humble origins of the Ranger and its stripped-down design may have been strictly for simple hauling, the 2020 Ford Ranger is loaded with stylish features that are turning heads everywhere. There are three trim levels for the Ranger, the XL, XLT, and the Lariat. All have four doors in Supercab or Supercrew styles and can come in two or four-wheel drive.

The XL is the base model, but there’s nothing basic about it. It comes standard with features like halogen headlights and halogen daytime running lights with the option for halogen fog lamps. Four-wheel drive models come with front-mounted tow hooks.

The Ranger XLT is the mid-level trim and has some great upgrades like the power-locking tailgate, standard front tow hooks, body-color bumpers and wheel moldings, and standard fog lamps. It also comes with power-adjustable side mirrors and a carbon black mesh grille trimmed in silver.

The XLT comes standard with 17-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels, with several options to upgrade in style, and an 18-inch option. You’ll also get access to additional exterior options like a chrome-tipped exhaust and a steel bash plate.

The Lariat is the top trim and comes nicely equipped with features like 18-inch machined aluminum wheels with Stealth Gray pockets and body-color door and tailgate handles. A chrome grille with chrome surround is standard along with power-folding, power-adjustable, heated side mirrors with turn signals, and security approach lights.

Appearance Packages

What’s more, the Ranger offers eight different appearance packages to give you the truck to match your style.

The Ford Performance Parts Package package comes in two separate levels with a third level arriving in early 2021. The Ford Performance Parts Package will let you push your Ranger on and off the road. A stylish Black Appearance Package includes black fenders, a black painted grille, black wheels, and black accents all around.

Ford selected the color Magnetic and used it on the trim with the Sport Appearance Package. Unique wheels, side-view mirrors, and trim all around are decked out for a sportier look and feel. This package is only available on the XLT and Lariat trims.

The STX Appearance Package is only available on the XL trim. This package adds a bold style. Aluminum wheels, fog lamps, black bumpers, and the STX box decal all elevate the XL.

Chrome Appearance Package adds striking style with front and rear chrome bumpers, a chrome grille, and chrome wheels. It also adds front-mounted tow hooks and fog lamps.

In addition to performance upgrades, the FX4 Off-Road Package includes an exposed steel bash plate, skid plates, and aggressive off-road tires. The FX2 Package is designed for the two-wheel-drive models. This package is off-road-tuned and features 17-inch OWL tires with 18-inch tires as an option.

A Trailer Tow Package is also available and adds powerful options to increase towing capacity along with a Class 4 hitch and 4/7 pin connections.

Power To Perform

Every Ford Ranger is powered by the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with a twin-scroll turbo, direct-injection, and 16-valves. The twin-scroll technology extracts exhaust gases from pairs of cylinders. The result is maximum pulse energy to the turbine wheel for better responsiveness and virtually no lag.

Each Ford Ranger model uses the same 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. This patented technology optimizes the progression of gears for smooth, fast shifting both up and down the gearbox. This unique transmission design includes wide-span gear spacing with drag-reducing gear actions and three overdrive gears.

This powertrain puts out an impressive 270 horsepower and a best-in-class gas-powered 320 pound-feet of torque. It also features start/stop technology for additional economy. This system shuts the engine off when idling, and starts up again when you press the accelerator.

Electronic Shift-On-the-Fly is standard on the four-wheel-drive models. This system switches from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive (high and low) with the turn of a dial. The electronic-locking rear differential locks the rear axle completely, sending power to both wheels.

Terrain Management System

Ford’s Terrain Management System is standard on the FX4 Package and available as an upgrade on the other trims. This system features four drive modes to tailor your Ranger to the road conditions.

Choose Normal mode for your everyday driving. Opt for Grass/Gravel/Snow mode for when conditions get slippery. Mud/Ruts mode is great for those dirt roads, and Sand mode is perfect for the weekend beach excursion.

Superior Towing Capability

When equipped with the Trailer Tow Package the Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds with a payload of 1,800 pounds. The tow package comes with a trailer sway control system that uses Ford’s AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control). This system uses sensors to your Ranger and adjusts braking and engine rpm to keep you moving safely forward.

Your rearview camera system is equipped with the Dynamic Hitch Assist system as part of the Trailer Tow Package. This technology puts a dotted line on your screen that curves in the direction you need to turn the steering wheel, guiding you easily to the hitch.

Ford Co-Pilot360

Now your Ford Ranger can be equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360, a suite of driver-assist systems designed to help you drive safer on the roads. A Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking system uses radar and cameras to watch the road ahead. When it detects a potential collision it will alert you with visual and audio cues. Should you fail to react in time it will apply the brakes to help mitigate or avoid an accident.

Ford’s BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Rear Cross-Traffic and Trailer Coverage watches the road around your Ranger and trailer, giving you eyes where you normally can’t see. The system will alert you when a vehicle enters your blind spot or crosses behind you while in reverse.

A Lane-Keeping System uses cameras to watch the road when traveling in marked lanes. The system is two-fold, alerting you with a series of vibrations through the steering wheel when it detects a drift. Should you fail to react it will apply gentle steering correction to help return you to your lane. You can set the system to deactivate either function or both.

The Reverse Sensing System detects objects that are close to your Ranger and difficult to see. Curve Control uses the AdvanceTrac with RSC system to check your speed through turns. It helps slow you down to stay in control.

Adaptive Cruise Control is included in the Technology Package. This system uses similar technology to keep your Ranger at a preset speed and distance while in traffic. The system slows you down as the traffic slows, and when the way ahead clears will return you to your presets.

Interior Convenience and Technology

Every Ranger comes standard with FordPass Connect. Download the app and you can unlock features like remote start, lock and unlock, scheduled remote starts, find your vehicle, and more. The system turns your Ranger into a 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. You can connect up to 10 devices and it has a range of up to 50 feet from the vehicle.

Ford’s Sync 3 lets you sync your smartphones and tablets through the 8-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow you to send and receive calls, texts, access your favorite apps, get navigation, stream music, and more.

Ford+Alexa allows you to bring the capabilities of Alexa into your Ranger. You can shop, navigate, and even control your smart-home devices while driving. Ford and Waze is also available through the Sync 3 system. This navigation app will help you avoid accidents and traffic jams, and is operated hands-free on the touchscreen.

Digital Roadside Assistance is standard on certain models and available on all Rangers. Now you can call for flat tire help, jump-start a battery, and more. Simply open the FordPass Connect app and request help.

Everything sounds better on your Bang and Olufsen sound system. This 10-speaker system delivers power and clarity through proper tuning and speaker placement.
