Everything You Need to Know about the 2020 Ford Explorer

The 2020 Ford Explorer is fully redesigned with you and your family in mind.  With plenty of cargo space and seating, this is the perfect vehicle for family outings, sporting events, and that road trip you’ve been dreaming of. It also boasts exceptional gas mileage for an SUV so your road trip isn’t such a far fetched idea.

First, let’s decide which model is best suited for your adventures and then we’ll talk about the performance, safety features, and a few comparisons so you can start outlining your budget and get ready to sign on the dotted line.

Which Ford Explorer is Right for You and Your Family?

Regardless of which model you choose, your family will be riding in style. Let’s see what the major differences are.

Ford Explorer Platinum

The most important thing to note about the Ford Explorer Platinum is that it is only available in 4-wheel drive. It comes with a tow package that includes front and rear skid plates. We think the active park assist features for parallel parking is also a nice feature.

Ford Explorer Limited

The Limited version will save you a little bit of money still with upgraded benefits like leather upholstery and heated and ventilated front seats.  You’ll also like the 360-degree parking camera that includes front parking sensors

Ford Explorer XLT

Of course, to shave a few dollars off the price tag, you can opt for the XLT that features the Ford MyKey safe driving system. Although, you won’t find a leather interior in this model.

Ford Explorer ST

The Ford Explorer Sport also features 4-wheel drive with a tow package and sport-tuned suspension for climbing mountains or any other adventure you find yourself getting into.

Performance

You’ll find a few available options starting with the 300-horsepower, four-cylinder base model that is a bit more powerful than the average midsize SUV. They all handle well in traffic so you can feel safe on the road.

Gas Mileage

As we mentioned, the Ford Explorer gets great gas mileage with the rear-wheel model starting at 21 mpg in town and 28 mpg on the highway. You can’t get much better than that for an SUV.

Handling

Overall, it’s a comfortable ride with somewhat of an athletic feel, especially around corners. Some drivers even claim that it rides like a truck with enhanced body lean.

Engine

We’re proud to say that the new Explorer is responsive and on point when it comes to acceleration and speed. With a 10-speed automatic transmission, this SUV almost literally gets up and goes.

Towing Capacity

For a mid-size vehicle, the towing capacity is something to be recognized. The properly equipped models can tow up to 5,600 pounds which is significantly more than the 2019 models.

Safety

With basic features installed like blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and automatic high-beam lights, you’ll always feel safe piloting the road. There is also a pre-collision system with forward collision warning and pedestrian detection for an added level of comfort.

Ford Explorer Interior

With three rows that seat at least 6 people, you’ll have plenty of room for the whole family and a few taggers along. There is also an optional second-row bench seat available in select models.

Quality

The quality is on par with other standard SUV models. The interior is well-made and features a few different materials for a little diversity. Of course, fully loaded models include a leather interior.

Cargo Space

You can’t get much better than 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat alone. And, with 87.8 cubic feet total when all rear seats are folded, you can haul all your garden supplies or catering event materials. Whatever you need, there’s space for it.

Seating

The Ford Explorer with captain seats is a nice option but the great news is you have choices with your new Ford Explorer seating. The Ford Explorer seats fold and slide forward and kids can easily navigate their seating options with the second-row captain seat option.

Tech (Bluetooth, Navigation, Infotainment)

Of course, any 2020 model vehicle you look at will have great new tech options and the 2020 Ford Explorer is no different. You’ll enjoy an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touch screen installed on the dash for easy navigating and entertainment.

Ford Explorer vs. the Competition

Again, with so many options out there, you’ll want to do some comparison shopping. Here’s how our new Explorer stacks up against its own and the best competitor.

Chevrolet Traverse

The Traverse has a lower price point but the Explorer has better accelerations with a higher towing capacity. Each seats at least six people and a similar cargo space.

Ford Edge

The Ford Edge is our other midsize SUV but it only seats 5 people among 2 rows. The Explorer also has more powerful engine options.

How Much Does the 2020 Ford Explorer Cost?

The 2020 Ford Explorer lists for a cool $36,675 MSRP with base trim but you could pay upwards of $60,000 for the Platinum version with all the goodies.

Overall, it’s a nice ride, nicer than in past years. You will spend a little more than most other high-ranked midsize SUVs on the market. So, make sure you do your homework before you make your decision to be sure you know what you want.
